Hangar Art Association was founded in October 2006 in Istanbul, by a group of young people aged from 25 to 35. Hangar aims to bring young artists with different actors in the society and provide them a common platform for community focussed work. In addition Hangar seeks to open an independent cultural centre in Istanbul where the disadvantaged young artists can meet with people from different professions and realise joint art projects for urban development that can contribute to active citizenship and social integration.
In the past two years Hangar gained a significant experience in organising cultural activities and festivals. The very characteristic of working principle of Hangar is that the activity should be developed, organised and implemented with the participation of the target groups. Hangar organised numerous workshops, cultural events and street art festivals in cooperation with street artists, foreign students and migrants, local communities and lately the local municipality. Currently, Hangar holds an important position in the network of cultural organisations as well as in the youth field.
